When East Side families are deciding where to eat — somewhere unfussy, somewhere kids will actually finish their plates, somewhere mom and dad can each find a dish they love — Thien Vietnam 2 on 8th Street has been the answer for years. Here is what to know before your first visit.
The 8th Street neighbourhood, and where we fit
8th Street East is Saskatoon's most-trafficked retail corridor — a long strip that takes you from Broadway across Circle Drive out to the College Park and Lakewood neighbourhoods. People know it for big-box shopping and quick errands, but those who live nearby know it has quietly become one of the city's strongest restaurant strips, too. Thien Vietnam 2 sits at 1301 8 St E #2, easy to find with plenty of parking, and we have spent years serving the families, students and shift workers who call this side of Saskatoon home.
What East Side families actually order
Vietnamese restaurants can be intimidating if you have never been to one — the menu is long, the dishes are unfamiliar, and the kids may have firm opinions. Here is the way most regulars build a family meal:
- One big pho for the table. Order a large pho dac biet (combination beef) and a stack of side bowls. Even kids who say they do not like soup tend to come around when they get to add their own bean sprouts and lime.
- A bun bowl per adult. Cold vermicelli, grilled lemongrass meats and crisp pickled vegetables. Filling without being heavy.
- Crispy spring rolls and fresh rolls to share. The crowd-pleaser. We have yet to meet the seven-year-old who refuses a cha gio.
- One Chinese-side dish for the picky eater. Ginger beef, lemon chicken, or sweet and sour pork. Familiar enough that nobody goes home hungry.
Three cuisines, one kitchen
Thien Vietnam is, as the name suggests, Vietnamese first — but we have always served Thai and Chinese dishes alongside, because that is the way our family has cooked for as long as we have been in business. The Vietnamese side covers all the classics: pho in several variations, bun noodle bowls, com tam broken-rice plates, banh mi when supplies allow, and a long list of stir-fries with rice. The Thai side leans on pad thai, tom yum, basil chicken and curry dishes. The Chinese side is the everyday comfort food you grew up ordering — chow mein, fried rice, ginger beef, cashew chicken, hot and sour soup.
For families with mixed preferences this is a quiet superpower. Nobody has to compromise; everyone gets the meal they were hoping for.
Dietary needs and customizations
A lot of our menu adapts well. Most Vietnamese dishes can be made vegetarian by swapping in tofu, and rice noodles mean a lot of soups and bowls are naturally gluten-free (always tell your server, so we can adjust). Spice levels are made to order — if mild means mild, please say so when you order. And for serious allergies, we ask that you tell us up front, in person or in the order notes online, so we can plate carefully.

Why we are part of the East Side
A neighbourhood restaurant is more than a place to eat — it is the spot you stop in on the way home from the rink, the place you take your in-laws when they visit, the kitchen that keeps a Friday-night standing order for the kids. We do not take that lightly. We know our regulars by name, we know your "usual," and if you go quiet for a few weeks we notice. The East Side has been very good to us, and we plan to be here for many more.
