Our Circle Drive location is a few minutes from Lawson Heights, Silverwood Heights, River Heights and University Heights, and an easy detour for anyone heading off Circle Drive East to come home from work. Most of our weeknight orders are takeout and delivery — people grabbing dinner on the way home from the office, parents picking up something easy after the kids' practice, students living in the apartments across the river. We have organized the kitchen and the menu around that reality.

Dishes that travel well — what to order for pickup

Not every restaurant dish survives the trip home. Some go soggy, some lose their crunch, some just do not reheat. Here is what we recommend ordering when you know you are taking it home:

• Pho — packed in three parts (broth, noodles, garnishes) so it stays at its best until you assemble it at home. Tip: warm the bowl first, then pour the broth.
• Bun noodle bowls — designed to be eaten cold or at room temperature, which makes them ideal takeout. They taste exactly as good ten minutes after you order as they do at the table.
• Stir-fries with rice — pad thai, ginger beef, cashew chicken, basil chicken. These hold heat well and reheat in a wok or pan in a few minutes if dinner gets delayed.
• Fried rice and chow mein — built for travel. Throw them on the table family-style.
• Crispy spring rolls (cha gio) — keep the container open on the drive home so they stay crisp.

What is on the menu

The full Thien Vietnam menu — Vietnamese, Thai and Chinese — is available at Thien 3. That includes pho in all its variations, bun bowls, com tam broken-rice plates, spring rolls and imperial rolls, pad thai, tom yum, curry dishes, ginger beef, chow mein, fried rice, and a long list of stir-fries with chicken, beef, pork, shrimp or tofu. Spice levels are made to order; vegetarian substitutions are available across most of the menu.

A note on reheating

For the best results at home: reheat broth on the stove (not the microwave), warm rice and stir-fries in a covered pan with a splash of water, and crisp up fried rolls in a 200°C oven for a few minutes if they have lost their crunch. The food was cooked properly the first time — a little care on the second pass and it tastes the way it did when it left our kitchen.
